Tanzania - Teaching in the Pare Mountains

At 1700m above sea level, with its stunning views across into Kenya, our selected location in the Pare Mountains is extremely beautiful although quite remote. There are lots of places to visit at weekend nearby and the locals are incredibly friendly.

Our programme offers volunteers the opportunity to teach at the Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as giving classes to women at the local pottery company.

This region appeals to those who are keen to do some walking and to leave the big town 'comforts' behind for a few weeks!

At the local Primary Schools, most subjects are taught in Kiswahili and our volunteers teach English but also other subjects such as Sports, Art and Craft and Drama (if appropriate).

At the Secondary Schools, most subjects are taught in English so we are helping with other subjects such as Physics and Biology where local teachers are in great shortage, as well as giving extra curricular lessons in, computers and sport.

The classes at the local pottery business focus on developing conversational skills and broadening vocabulary, as the participants are keen to improve their communication with visitors. The workers are also really keen to learn new methods to work and discover new designs. Any design and handicraft skills are more than welcome.

Accommodation is in a comfortable and safe guesthouse that belongs to the village Chairman, Mr. Ishmaeli. Food is provided and is excellent and mostly home grown!
