- Teaching in Longido
Longido is a Maasai village, less than two hours north of Arusha, located in a very peaceful area below Mount Longido.
Our programme offers volunteers the opportunity to teach in our 'Open Air Boma' School, at the women’s market and at the Longido Primary School.
The Open Air Boma School is our own MondoChallenge school (originally built by some of our former volunteers) with a backdrop of the mountain just on its doorstep. Volunteers are teaching English to adults and teenagers to provide them with the skills needed in their various jobs. The students really benefit from the lessons, as they would have no other way of getting an education. For all of them, going to class is the highlight of their day!
The women in the handicrafts market are also keen to learn English to help them sell their wares to tourists!
At Longido Primary School, most subjects are taught in Kiswahili and our volunteers teach English and sports. The Headmistress is delighted that the students' results in English have improved enormously since we started. The school has a small blind unit with over 20 children and several blind teachers. They are avid learners of English!
Accommodation is either in a small guesthouse run by our local contact, or in host family. There is also an option of self-catering house.
