Tanzania - Teaching in the Arusha Region

Volunteer Comments

Vicky Harris from the UK

“Before you do something like volunteering for three months in a developing country, you sit and think about it.  A lot!  You try to run through every possible scenario and prepare yourself for every possible disappointment or disaster. You worry that you’re not going to be able to cope with what might be thrown at you, that you’ll be the first volunteer to give up on the first day, that you’re going to do or say something to offend the people who have so kindly welcomed you into their home. You don’t dare to hope that this might become the experience you’d always dreamed about, the one you’ve been waiting to have since you were ten years old.
But that’s what it was: everything I’d hoped for and much, much more.”

Heather Carter from the UK

“I enjoyed every moment in Ngaramtoni from teaching to meeting up with the other volunteers on the weekend.  It was the best thing I have ever done.”

Kim Roberts from Australia

“I am constantly amazed by the people here. Many of them have lives that are harder than anything I have experienced, maybe harder than I can even comprehend. But they have this strength in them. This drive to keep going. Not only that but also be happy doing it. “

Richard Casey from the UK

"I have now finished my teaching and would like to say a massive thank you to you for offering me the opportunity to partake in such a rewarding project! I have had such a good time and I will hopefully send you a far more comprehensive thank you at some later date! "

Tore Kristensen from Norway

“Thanks for making my three months in Tanzania the best months in my life”
“the adult class was a real eye-opener for me. When I told to my class that I was leaving I could see the look on some of the girls faces. I don’t think they were angry at me, but they were frustrated. And I couldn’t really see how important this was for them. They wanted to learn English more than anything else […]. This made me start to think about the purpose of life. Is it sitting in a bank in Norway and moving money around for rich people or is it more to life?”

Tanya O'Dwyer from Australia

My favourite part of the day is walking to and from school and around the local area because all these tiny children come running out yelling 'good morning', 'how are you?'. They are so gorgeous. I am having a wonderful time and am so glad to be here!
