Tanzania - Teaching Programmes

Our programmes offer volunteers the opportunity to teach at primary or secondary schools as well as adult classes.

Many local people welcome the chance to improve their English, so volunteers are often involved in adult classes after school or helping women's groups to improve their skills.

Teaching opens the door to many additional programmes. Community work, environmental projects and others often flow from the work done in schools.

In the primary schools, most subjects are taught in Kiswahili and our volunteers can teach English, Sports and Music (if appropriate). English is much valued as a subject as the children have to compete to get into secondary schools and a good level of English is of great importance.

In the secondary school, children are taught in English, so our volunteers can teach various subjects, including sciences, sport and computer literacy, as well as helping the students improve their pronunciation and fluency in English.

The adult classes focus on developing conversational skills and broadening vocabulary, as the participants are keen to improve their job prospects and to communicate with tourists.

No specific qualifications are needed except a good level of general education, good communication skills and enthusiasm. Volunteers can work for various lengths of time and at various locations. We can generally arrange timetables to suit the skills of the volunteers and the needs of the school.
