Sri Lanka - Teaching in Manikhinna, Digana, Sarasavigama and Ranawane

In Manikhinna and Digana, as well as in the newer projects at Sarasavigama and Ranawane, volunteers work alongside monks and local staff in the village temples. Accommodation is with host families.

These temples are the real hubs of village life, enabling volunteers quickly to feel part of their communities.

Manikhinna and Digana are small villages situated approximately 12kms from Kandy. They are the longest running MondoChallenge projects in Sri Lanka being set up back in 2002 with the help of monk Dhammalokha who runs the temple at the former, and who also introduced us to the newest project at Sarasavigama (45 minutes away from the city).

Dhammalokha and the other monks are very active in the community and they encourage the villagers, (and the MondoChallenge volunteers) to make use of the temple grounds and buildings. Typical activities include teaching English as well as arts and crafts at the pre-schools. In addition, there are opportunities to conduct classes for older students and adults in the area.

Supporting these schools helps the local teachers by encouraging the children to use their imaginations and creativity, and exposing them to English speakers and people from different cultures.
