Sri Lanka - South Coast

Following the tragic events of 26th December 2004, MondoChallenge has identified several projects in desperate need of our volunteers.

These projects are based in the area of Hikkaduwa, a small town located 30 minutes from Galle. This was an area badly affected by the tsunami on the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is an idyllic spot, people are warm and welcoming, the weather is wonderful and the surroundings are beautiful.

We are currently working in partnership with a local Sri Lankan NGO, called the Foundation of Goodness, which runs a community centre in the village of Seenigama. The Foundation of Goodness has asked us to provide volunteers for two primary schools located in the villages of Seenigama and Thotagamuwa. The latter was completely destroyed by the tsunami, and classes are currently being held in the temple grounds where temporary classrooms have been set up.

In these schools, the focus for the volunteers is on involvement in activities such as sports, arts and crafts, English conversation and providing general care and an input of energy and fun. We understand the importance of helping these children to look to the future, something which will be crucial in helping them to rebuild their lives.

Volunteers will live with local host families giving a valuable insight into the local culture.
