The
Gambia - Teaching
in Makumbaya
Our programmes offer volunteers the opportunity to teach at mainly primary level education.
Many local people welcome the chance to improve their English, so volunteers looking for further work will find plenty to do.
Makumbaya Lower Basic School opened in 1980, they have 609 pupils from 10 surrounding villages, aged between 7-12 years old, being taught by 15 teachers.
Volunteers will be teaching basic English and Maths, and there are also some facilities for art, sport, music and drama for enthusiastic volunteers!
Volunteers can teach their own classes, or work with another teacher or volunteer, depending on their preference. They can also assist in creating a syllabus for classes, and working with local teachers to try and encourage some more imaginative teaching methods!
Makumbaya is one of the newest programme MondoChallenge has to offer in The Gambia, but with the first volunteers giving great reports, we hopefully continue to help the village with the volunteers help.
