The
Gambia - Teaching
in Kunkujang
Our programmes offer volunteers the opportunity to teach at mainly primary level education.
Many local people welcome the chance to improve their English, so volunteers looking for further work will find plenty to do.
Kunkujang is a medium size village with approximately 700 residents who live mainly on farming. The chairman of the Village Development Council is using his energy and contacts to initiate local projects. They have managed to start up a nursery school in the village, which saves the children having to walk 3-4 kilometres down a hot, dusty track to the nearest alternative school.
A local volunteer teacher from the village started teaching 75 children under a big tree in the middle of the village. They applied for money to build a permanent structure through the VSO fund, and were successful. The construction of the school is now complete and was done entirely by the villagers themselves.
Since February 2002, MondoChallenge volunteers have supported the school and provide invaluable assistance with English and Maths teaching.
A recent development has been the creation of a large garden with sesame plants, which should improve the school finances and therefore the live of the local community.
